Enroll in ACT Spring District Testing
School districts interested in participating in the ACT District Testing program are encouraged to sign up today to participate in the spring administration of the ACT® test. The program benefits students in a number of ways:

  • It provides them with free college-reportable ACT scores that they can use to apply to colleges and for financial aid and scholarships.
  • It provides them with personalized information to explore college and career options based on their individual strengths and interests.
  • It encourages them to consider the option of attending college, particularly for students who may not have seriously considered this option previously.

Work Ready Communities
The National Career Readiness Certificate crossed a major milestone in August with four million NCRCs nationwide. Also growing is Work Ready Communities (WRC) with the latest group of county teams graduating the WRC Academy in July from Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, and Tennessee. WRC’s new Regional Academy format launched in June for six counties in Mississippi. There is still time for new teams to enter the Fall Academy slated to start November 14 in New Orleans. ACT’s Workforce Summit in November includes two pre-conference sessions on WRC, one for beginners and another on How to Utilize WRC for teams already active. A special luncheon at the Summit plans to honor WRC teams that achieved certification between August 2016 to July 2017.

The Texas ACT Council prepares for the first Texas ACT Summit
Everything changes and ACT has undergone many changes since 2013. Before ACT moved away from its regional office structure, ACT’s Southwest Regional Office based in Austin hosted a popular conference that drew educators from Arizona, Arkansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas. This popular event was discontinued as ACT was reallocating resources into its current “One ACT” structure.

The Texas ACT Council has talked for years about how they and ACT might bring back a similar type of event to the Lone Star State and Southwest District. A way forward became clearer when the Louisiana ACT Council hosted an invitation only event called a “Plus 1 Meeting” where each ACT Council Member could invite one or more guests to attend a half day event focused on Work Ready Communities. Members of the Texas Council saw the Plus 1 model as way host a meaningful event without the time and resource intensive nature of a traditional conference.

On September 22 the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (Greater Houston area) will host the first Texas ACT Summit. The Summit will be a free, one-day, invitation-only professional development event sponsored by the Texas ACT Council. ACT professionals and Texas ACT users will be offering sessions on the following topics:

The Texas Council is hoping that the inaugural Texas ACT Summit will be the first step in creating a larger annual professional development event for Texas and the Southwest District.
